Johns Hopkins University Press (Hopkins Press) has teamed up with the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) to release a groundbreaking resource: Learning with AI: The K–12 Teacher’s Guide to a New Era of Human Learning, as highlighted in EdTech Innovation Hub. This comprehensive guide aims to empower educators by helping them integrate artificial intelligence (AI) tools into their classrooms effectively.

Set for release on November 26, 2024, the book explores how AI can transform education through interactive teaching methods, innovative assessment strategies, and the development of critical-thinking skills. It seeks to prepare students for the increasing role AI plays in schools and workplaces, while also equipping teachers to navigate the challenges associated with this rapidly evolving technology.

Barbara Kline Pope, executive director of Hopkins Press, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “Partnering with NSTA on this project means that more K–12 science teachers will be aware of and use this guidebook to enhance teaching and learning in a world where AI is available to everyone. Teachers will now have a reference to help them embrace the benefits of generative AI while also navigating the challenges surrounding this new technology.”

The book builds upon concepts from Teaching with AI, a prior publication by José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson. The new guide, co-authored by Joan Monahan Watson, director in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech, focuses specifically on K–12 applications.

Recognizing the growing prevalence of AI, the guide emphasizes the importance of AI literacy and its role in fostering inclusive and equitable classrooms. Strategies for educators include methods to create a balanced learning environment while leveraging AI's potential.

Cathy Iammartino, Chief Product Officer at NSTA, expressed enthusiasm for the resource: “AI has the potential to be a real game changer for educators, but its effectiveness relies on educators’ ability to know how to use this powerful tool properly to address their teaching needs. Learning with AI serves as a guide for educators, providing helpful strategies for incorporating AI in the classroom, while creating a more innovative, inclusive and equitable learning environment for their students. We are thrilled to be working with Hopkins Press to provide educators with this valuable resource.”

The guide will debut at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in March 2025, where Joan Monahan Watson will lead a session on its practical applications. Educators attending the event can also purchase the book directly.
